Description

"IT MAY SEEM STRANGE TO IMAGINE THE BLOGGING COMMUNITY AS A FORCE THAT WILL SHAPE THE INFORMATION ENVIRONMENT... (JENKINS 2006, P. 181). It all began with a circulation desk comment. A fourth-grade boy looked across the desk at me while checking out Mary Shelley's Frankenstein and said "you have some pretty good books in here, but why don't you have Star Wars?" As I assured him that Star Wars would be added to my purchasing consideration list, my inner researcher launched a series of questions too numerous to ask in that moment: What other books does he consider "good," and why? How does he decide? What are his friends reading? Do they discuss books? How does he view the school library collection? Other questions began to arise: Are kids from various cultural backgrounds finding themselves represented in our collection? Do both girls and boys identify with books Found here? What types of books are most appealing to various age groups or cultures? What other things does this boy read as well as books? The list went on and on, and my young friend could not possibly stay long enough to answer all the questions I had asked, nor could he alone possess all those answers. As the door closed behind him, I considered the possible ways that I might tap the wealth of information walking the halls. Thus began my quest to open a conversation within the school community.
